Remember that unbearable job you disliked so much?

We have all had one. So much of our time is spent working that it’s imperative to enjoy it. Life is too short.

We all thrive in different environments. I count myself lucky to genuinely love what I do and to have experienced working for companies (and for myself) where I have been truly happy. Companies that do meaningful work and share my values: promoting an environment based on trust, relationship building, respect for all, sharing knowledge, and delivering quality. Companies where I fit.

Not everyone is lucky enough to have had that and for those people work must feel like a chore and a grind. To those people I say, work doesn’t need to feel like that – make a change! Find your fit.

For those of us that have been lucky enough to experience true happiness at work, settling for anything else would jar. We have metaphorically enjoyed business class air travel and now feel a little shortchanged for legroom when we get into our old seat.

If like me meaningfulness, values and relationships are your primary barometer readings for happiness at work, it can be difficult to know if you are making the right move. It is a feeling.

I was recently asked why I accepted a permanent job with Prederi this year. I got to ‘try before you buy’ having worked with Prederi as an Associate a few times over the years – getting to peek past the public face of the company (through the curtain divider) and sense if it felt right.

So, to the barometer readings:

  • Meaningfulness – I feel like I am adding value and doing something of worth. Okay, nothing is truly altruistic, but I get a huge sense of satisfaction from helping healthcare and public sector organisations to be the best possible versions of themselves. I get to work on interesting and complex assignments, master new skills and improve – be challenged but in control.
  • Values – Prederi is a company that cares about its people and its customers – including our beloved NHS.  We build trust by doing what we say we will do and keep high standards. Always learning and sharing what we learn.
  • Relationships – Relationships are key to everything. Full stop. More so for a company with a relatively flat hierarchy and remote, assignment-based teams. I trust my colleagues and they trust me; we treat each other with respect, help each other and have fun along the way.

Ultimately, Prederi and me are a fit. It felt right to join the team.  They had me at “Contact me – we want you!”. Turns out, I wanted Prederi too!
